  • Microgrids in this database include systems serving electricity to multiple buildings and/or consisting of more than one distributed energy resource. Microgrids must operate either continuously or conditionally during normal operating conditions.
  • Microgrids with a Generation or Storage Capacity of 0.0 kW could represent generation or storage systems with unknown capacities.
  • Microgrids that operate continuously supply power to the host site on a regular basis, both in grid-connected and island mode, and can be relied upon for uninterrupted power during extended grid outages.
  • Microgrids that operate conditionally do not supply power to the host site on a continuous basis while grid connected. Instead, power supply to the site is based on the availability of renewable resources or market signals such as demand response or real-time pricing.
  • All microgrids in this database must be capable of supplying continuous power to site loads when disconnected from the larger grid.

State Summary for North Carolina

Technology Sites* Capacity (KW)
Total 12 46,557
Biogas 1 185
CHP 2 19,500
Diesel 4 10,100
Solar 9 5,367
Storage 10 11,405

* Most microgrids contain multiple technologies, so site totals by technology may be greater than the total number of microgrid sites in the state.
